Kozhikode Tourist Attractions, Places - Kozhikode Tourism and Travel Guide

There are many places in and around Calicut with immense natural beauty. Kozhikode also known as Calicut is an ancient port city and today is the third largest city of Kerala. There are many historically importan places are there in Kozhikode. Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed Kappad near Calicut in 1498. Here is a list of tourist places in and around Kozhikode. Kozhikode is home to two premier educational institutions of national importance- the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode, and the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NITC).

Krishna Menon Museum and Pazhassiraja Museum

Krishna Menon Museum situated at East Hill is five km by bus from the Railway station and city bus station. Maintained by the State Archaeological Department and consists of ancient coins, models of temples, mural paintings, antique bronzes, dolmenoid cists and other items of archeological importance.

Beach

Kozhikode Beach is an important touris spot in the city. Well maintained beach sides and roads. A perfect place to spend your evening.

Sweetmeats Street

Sweetmeats Street or S.M Street got its name from the shops selling this famous Calicut Halwa. Kozhikode is famous for its Halwa and Sweets. This is one of the buiest sopping center of Kozhikode.

Beypore

Beypore is its traditional ship building yard where the world famous "URU" is build, which has been a mode of transportation on the high seas for ages. It is just 11 KMs from he city and city buses are avaialbel to reach Beypore.

Thali Temple

A temple of Lord Shiva which is renovated in the 18th Century and includes shrines of Ganapati, Narasimha and Saasta. The temple is constructed in 14th century by Swamy Thirumulpad, the Zamorin of Calicut.

Dolphin’s Point

A wonderful place located about 2 km away from the city where one can see dolphin’s playing in the sea in the early morning. There is a Lions Club Park and the Light House there.

Mananchira

Manchiria is the heart of the city. Mananchira hosts cites important institutions like town hall and the public library. The Mananchira square is a good place to spend your evening.

Science Planetarium

Science Planetarium reveals the mysteries of universe and enlightens about the planets and stars. Situated in the heart of the city near Moffusil bus stand.

Sarovaram Park

Sarovaram is an eco-friendly development adjacent to Canoly Canal. It is one of the popular spots in the city to spend an evening.

Kalipoika

A recreational boating centre within the heart of city can be seen at Arayadathupalam. Boating in pedal boats and row boats are facilitated here.

AROUND KOZHIKODE

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary

Located 25 kms away from Kozhikode city. Kadalundi is the home for migratory birds. Starting from November till end of April Kadalundi becomes a dwelling place for thousands of migratory birds including Terns, Gulls, Herons, Sand pipers and Whim brels.

Kappad Beach

Kappad is 16 km away from Kozhikode city. Kappad is one of the most best beaches in the city and is in this beach that the Portuguese Navigator Vasco Da Gama landed on his discovery of the sea route from Europe to India in 1498.

Peruvannamuzhi

Peruvannamuzhi is 60kms from Kozhikode city. The Peruvannamuzhi dam site, surrounded with hills is a beautiful picnic spot. The Peruvannamuzhi reservoir provided facilities for speedboat and rowboat cruises.

Kakkayam

Kakkayam is around 78 km from calicut city. The orakuzhi water falls and dam site are places of interest.

Thusharagiri water falls

Thusharagiri is around 68 km from calicut city. A place brilliant for the famous eye catching water falls. Accomodations available nearby town Kodancheri.

India's first Circus Academy opened at Thalassery

Thalassery or Tellichery produced many famous circus artists as well as known for many home for many circus companies.Thalassery always considered as the cradle of Circus industry not in Kerala but in India. The first Circus Academy of the country is inaugurated at Chirakunni near Thalassery.Kerala Sports Minister M Vijayakumar inaugurated the Circus Academy. The Kerala state government aiming to take the Circus academy to international standards with the cooperation of tourism department.
According to the media reports a permanent building for the academy over 10 acres of land would constructed at Kundoormala this year and the state government had made a budgetary allocation of Rs 25 lakhs for developing the academy.
The circus industry was almost dead in Kerala. This new move from government could rejuvenate this long neglected sports.

How to reach munnar? - Bangalore to munnar -Distance from bangalore to munnar

Munnar is one of the most famous hill station in South India.These days people prefer Munnar than Ooty because of its scenic beauty and heavenly charm.
If you are planning a trip to Munnar from Bangalore the following are the suggested routes.It’s best that one starts early (5 or 6 AM) in the morning to reach Munnar by before it gets dark.Across the routes the Udumalpet -Munnar route offers amazing scenic beauty.The forest range starts from here and it’s a 70 km climb up the mountain till Munnar.The hill climb starts from Chinnar. Chinnar is famous for the Indira Gandhi National Park.


1.Bangalore-Kanakapura-Mysore-Chamrajnagar- Thimbum ghat-Sathiamangalam-Tirupur- Udumalpet- Munnar.
          Chamrajnagar-sathyamangalam stretch and Udumalpet-Munnar are hilly sections with scenic beauty.
2.Bangalore - Mysore- Nanjangud- Chamarajanagar- Sathtyamangalam- Punjaipuliampatti-Annur- Avanashi- Palladam- Udumalaipettai- Chinnar- Munnar.
          This is another route with a minor deviation.
3.Bangalore-Hosur-Krishnagiri-Thoppur-Mecheri-Mettur-Bhavani-Coimbatore, Pollachi and Udumalaipet.
              This is shorter route than Route no:3 and around 480 Kms.But you can view Mettur dam if   you choose this route.
4.Bangalore-Hosur-Krishnagiri-Dharmapuri-Bhawani-Salem-Perandurai-Vijapuri-Tirrupur-Paladam-Udumalapettai-Chinnar-Marayoor-Munnar
                This route is around 475 Kms.Along the Pollachi – Udumalapet route you will amazed with miles of green fields and lines of Windmills on both sides of road.
5.Bangalore - Krishnagiri –Dharmapuri-Salem-Erode-Avinashi-Coimbatore-Pollachi –Udumalapet – Chinnar – Munnar
        This is around 500 Kms.

Munnar possibly the most famous hill station in South India now.It is a town located in the Idduki district of India's Kerala state (God's Own Country).The Munnar panchayat in the Devikulam block is the largest panchayat in the Idduki district.Sprawling tea plantations, picture book towns, winding lanes, trekking and holiday facilities make Munnar a unique experience for the tourist and traveller.Idukki is the most beautiful High range district of Kerala.Idukki is the largest District of Kerala . About 97 percent of the total area of the District is covered by rugged mountains and forests.Idukki has three main rivers - Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhayar - and their tributaries. The River Pamba also has its origin here.
Geography
Munnar is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala.
The region in and around Munnar varies in height from 2,000 meters (6,562 ft) to 2,600 meters (8,530 ft) above mean sea level.

Climate

Munnar enjoys a salubrious climate. The temperature ranges between −10 °C (14 °F) and 0 °C (32 °F) in winter and 8 °C (46.4 °F) and 16 °C (60.8 °F) in summer.

Season
The tourist season in Munnar is from August to May. However, even the monsoons are lovely with many streams and rivulets in the area and post drizzle the dew drenched tea gardens looking majestic and heavenly enshrouded in light mist .

Pothamadu - 6 km from Munnar
Pothaamedu, an important travel attraction of Munnar, located 6 km from Munnar.Pothaamedu offers an excellent view of the tea, coffee and cardamom plantations in Munnar. Pothamadu and the breathtaking scenary here are ideal for trekking and long mountain walks.
Chithirapuram-10 km from Munnar
Chithirapuram is famous for its sleepy little cottages, bungalows, old playgrounds and courts.Chithirapuram still exudes an old-world charm.

Mattupetty -13 km from Munnar
Mattupetty situated at a height of 1700 m and 13 km from Munnar.The Mattupetty lake and dam is a very beautiful picnic spot. DTPC Idukki provides boating facilities on the Mattupetty Dam.Mattupetty is known for its highly specialised dairy farm-the Indo Swiss Livestock Project. Over a 100 varieties of high-yielding cattle are reared here.

Lock Heart Gap- 13km from Munnar
Lock Heart Gap with it's fresh mountain air, the mistclad hills and panoramic view make it an ideal place for adventure tourism and trekking.


Rajamala - 15km from Munnar
Rajamala is famous for Nilgiri tahr.This is the natural habitat of the Nilgiri tahr which is fast becoming extinct. The Nilgiri tahrs are today redused to small herds found in the Eravikulam-Rajamala region. The total number of Nilgiri tahrs in Rajamala is estimated at 1317.

Echo Point - 15 km from Munnar
Echo Point got it's name from the natural echo phenomenon here. Echo Point is on the way to Top Stations from Munnar.

Devikulam -7 km from Munnar
Devikulam is a small hill station about 16 km southwest of Munnar from Munnar and is about 1800 meters above the sea level.
Devikulam with its velvet lawns, exotic flora and fauna and the cool mountain air is a rare experience. The Sita Devi Lake with its mineral waters and picturesque surroundings is a good picnic spot.

Pallivasal - 8 km from Munnar
Pallivasal is the site of the first Hydro-Electric Project in Kerala

Attukal- 9 km from Munnar
Attukal located at a distance of about 9 kilometers from Munnar, Attukal provides beautiful scenery of stunning waterfalls and lush green hills.Attukal is a feast for the eyes.

Nyayamakad  -10km from Munnar
Nyayamakad is 10 km from Munnar is located between Munnar and Rajamala.Nyayamakad is a land of breathtaking waterfalls. The waters cascade down a hill from a height of about 1600 metres. The enchanting surroundings make an excellent picnic spot and trekking point.


Eravikulam National Park - 15 km from Munnar
The 97 sq. km. park is situated in the Devikulam taluk and is home to the Nilgiri tahr.
The Anamudi peak (2695m) which is the tallest peak in Kerala is located in the park.

Power House waterfalls - 18 km from Munnar
Power House waterfalls is on the way to Thekkady from Munnar.The waterfall cascades down a steep rock, 2000m above sea level.

Kundala - 20 km from Munnar
Kundala is a small beautiful town on the way to Top Stations.Aruvikkad waterfalls is also near Kundala.

Guruvayur is famous for the Sri Krishna Temple, said to have been visited by Lord Brahma himself.The square Sreekovil is the sacred sanctum Sanctorum of the temple, housing the main deity of Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord MahaVishnu.
Guruvayur Located 29 km north-west of Thrissur town.
Guruvayur has got a railway station towards the east of the temple which is connected to the Madras-Mangalore main line at Thrissur.

Athirapilly Falls -Athirapilly water Falls
Athirappally is located around 60 km from Thrissur, at the entrance to Sholayar ranges, and is one of the most famous picnic spots around that area. Athirappilly Falls is one of the best places to visit in Kerala.
Athirapilly Falls is at a height of around 80 ft. and is located amidst forests. The fall joins the Chalakkudy River after a plummeting drop of 80 ft.

Vazhachal is a picturesque spot just a short drive from Athirapally and is adjacent to dense green forestland. It is located approximately 3 km from Athirappilly Falls.

Arattupuzha temple
Arattupuzha Temple is the famous Sree Sastha temple situated at Aarattupuzha, a beautiful village located 15 km away from Thrissur town in Kerala.Arattupuzha temple is believed to be 3000 year old.Aarattupuzha Pooram festival celeberated during March.

Vadakkumnathan Temple
The Vadakkumnathan Temple is the venue of the world famous Pooram festival, celebrated annually in April-May.
The Vadakkumnathan temple stands out as one of the oldest temples in the state of Kerala.The vast ground around the temple is called Tekkinkadu or Forest of Teak Wood.The temple has a Kuttambalam, which is the theatre hall for staging kuttu, an ancient dramatic form of art famous in Kerala.
