Boat cruises on the Periyar Lake restarted recently after the Thekkady boat disaster occurred on September 30 2009.(The double-decker passenger boat Jalakanyaka sank in Lake Thekkady, Periyar National Park).

The Forest Department, Thekkady offers facilities for elephant rides through the jungle.You may get glimpses of real wildlife including a mighty Elephent or Bison or even a Tiger.

Kumily is an important shopping centre and spice trade centre.This plantation town, closely associated with Thekkady, is situated on the outskirts of the Periyar Sanctuary.

  • Mangala Devi Temple - 15 KM from Thekkady.
The temple dedicated to Kannaki is situated on the top of a hill in Periyar Tiger Reserve. You have to cover 12kms of rough forest road to reach here. The temple opens only once in a year for the public during the annual chithrapournami festival.

Vandiperiyar is a major spice trade centre.The River Periyar flowing through the centre of this town nourishes its vast tea, coffee and pepper plantations.

  • Vandanmedu - 25 KM from Kumali.
Considered as one of the world's largest auction centres for candamom.

  • Pullumedu- 43 KM from Thekkadi
Pullumedu offers a stunning view of the rolling hills draped in lush greenery velvet lawns and rare flora and fauna.

  • Ramakalmedu - 40 KM from Thekkady.
Rolling green hills and the fresh mountain air make Ramakalmedu an enchanting retreat. The hills top also offers a Panoramic view of picturesque villages of Bodi and Cumbum on the Eastern slop of the western ghats.This mountain peak that overlooks eastern slpoes of the Western Ghats and the vast plains of Tamil Nadu.
The place owes its name to the tale that the lord Sree Rama, had set his foot on this rock. Also, Kerala’s biggest statue, Kuravan & Kurathy is here. The rocks, between which the Idukki Arch Dam was built, are named Kuravan & Kurathy, two histrical characters of the local comminity.

  2. I was watching the video of Ullagan watcher and his accident. His painful ordeal is very sad. The government or forest department did not help him. Why hie is not getting the help? He put his life on the line for the tourists and saved their life and at the end he and his family is starving for good. He is in so much pain with his disabled hand. He said he is going to cut his hand due to pain. Please adivse his current condtion. Thank you.
