Kumarakom is a tourist village in Kottayam district, Kerala which is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake.
Kumarakom is the most famous tourist destination in Kerala. It is famous for its backwaters,houseboats and ofcourse Karimeen and chemmeen.
The Vembanad Lake, the largest backwater in Kerala, is habitat for many marine and freshwater fish species and it teems with Pearl spot (Karimeen in Malayalam), shrimp (chemmeen in Malayalam) and prawns.

How to reach Kumarakom
One can access Kumarakom by many means:

  • By air: Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport (70 Km ) and Trivandrum International Airport it is a 171 Km (approximately 3 hours ride by road)
  • By rail: Kottayam is the nearest railway station and is well connected with rest of the country.
  • By boat: From Muhamma (near Alappuzha) to Kumarakom Jetty.
  • By road:(16 kilometres) Buses and taxis are easily available at all times of the day from Kottayam.
