Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (STEC) to have DNA BAR CODing centre

According to the media reports ,Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (STEC) will start a state-of-the-art DNA bar coding centre for all forms of life will start functioning in Thiruvananthapuram from June 11.
The proposed DNA BAR CODing centre would be in the Tropical Botanical and Garden Research Institute and STEC campus in Thiruvananthapuram.DNA barcodes will help scientists identify species from given samples.
A DNA bar code is a molecular tool to identify plant and animal species, which is widely used in taxonomy research, biodiversity studies and government regulation and is like the barcode that recognises an item at a supermarket.

State Institute of Medical Education and Technology (SIMET) in Kerala

The Kerala government decided to set up the State Institute of Medical Education and Technology (SIMET) to promote research in medical education sector. The SIMET would function with the funds of the state and also grant from Centre.
According to the state Health Minister P K Sreemathi,three nursing colleges, one each at Malampuzha in Palakkad district, Uduma in Kasargod and Palluruthy in Ernakulam would be started in the first phase of the SIMET's programme. The Institute would be an autonomous institution under the control of the government.The New nursing colleges would function by utilizing the services of taluk and district hospitals nearby.
Admission to the new colleges would be started once the clearance of Indian Nursing Council was obtained.Paramedical institutions and more nursing colleges would be started in future under the Institute.
Professional courses in Ayurveda and Homeo branch of medicine also would be started.Hospital administration also would be started as part of the initiative.

Ocean Blue and Stark communications to be the event managers for Volvo Ocean Race

Cochin Port Trust (CPT) appointed a consortium of Mumbai - based Ocean Blue Boating and Kerala-based Stark Communications as the 'event management team' for the Kochi stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race.
Billed as a combination of ''sports, business and glamour,'' the Volvo Ocean Race's only stopover in India will be at Cochin Port between December three to 14. This is the first time that the race, also described as the 'Formula One' of yacht racing will, be stopping over in India during its 39,000 nautical mile long itinerary.
Sport 18, a division of Network 18 and Screenary Media Pvt Ltd., had been appointed recently as the marketing managers for the event.
The event is jointly hosted by CPT and the Kerala Tourism Department.The entire event is expected to cost about Rs 30 crore.Cochin Port Trust will be spending Rs 20 crore more on lengthening the BTP jetty from the present 200 meters to 330 meters.
The sailing marathon will start from Alicante, Spain, in October 2008. Its other stopovers are Cape Town, Singapore, Qingdao in China, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway in Ireland, Goteborg and Stockholm before it ends in St Petersburg in Russia in early 2009.

Two Kerala police officials were suspended in the case in which Himaval Maheswara Bhadrananda, against whom police have registered a case for allegedly threatening journalists of a Malayalam daily, tried to shoot himself with a pistol in the police station.Three days after arresting high profile Swami Amritachaitanya alias Santosh Madhavan, Kerala Police self-styled godman Himaval Maheswara Bhadranandaji alias 'Ernakulam Swami' for trespass and threatening mediapersons.Bhadranandaji was arrested on a complaint from the local office of 'Managalam' daily, alleging that he barged into the newspaper office on May 13 and threatened the news editor and chief reporter.
The police had on May 13 arrested Santosh Madhavan on charges of cheating, rape of a minor girl and making of pornographic films.

Kerala Police searched the bank locker of controversial Swami Amritachaitanya alias Santosh Madhavan and seized more cassettes of pornographic films allegedly made by him exploiting minor girls.
Media reports proves that 'Swami' excelled in his art.
Reports says that about 25 micro video cassettes were seized from the Federal Bank locker of Santhosh Madhavan.
These cassettes also contained blue films made by Madhavan, they said. Hidden cameras had been installed in the swami's flat and his 'Santhitheeram' guest house to make the films.
Certain media reports that some film actresses also featured in some of the CDs seized by the police from Madhavan's flat,but as per new reports kerala police denied that. Madhavan was arrested here on May 13 in connection with the rape of minor girls and cheating a Dubai-based Keralite woman of Rs 40 lakh.
Let us wait and see how 'swami' will 'handle' the case !!

The much awaited Malayalam movie Twenty:20 by the Malayalam Artists Association (AMMA) has almost finished 85 percent of its shooting. The film, is directed by Joshi.

Except Meera Jasmine ,the movie will have all Four Malayalam superstars, three frontline heroines, 67 top line actors, 17 playback singers, maximum release centers, One film-‘Twenty:Twenty', the biggest multistarrer ever to be made in India.This film expected to change the Malayalam film industry in a different way.
The song written by Gireesh Puthencherry starting with ''Ushasssil'' is set to music by Berny Ignacius is a five minute song will be sung by 17 leading singers of Mollywood including Dr.Yesudas and Jayachandran, which will be also a record in Indian music industry.
It is reported that Mammootty plays an advocate opposite Gopika.Mohanlal plays a businessman.Bhavana plays Dileep's heroine.Meera Jasmine is not appearing in the movie.
This multi-starrer film is supposed to release in 118 theaters, the biggest ever release in Malayalam.

Another controversial yet interesting piece of news from Kerala.
The Controversial Kerala god man Swami Amritananthachaithanya alias Santhosh Madhavan was Tuesday arrested and charged with three offenses, including rape of a teenager.
Inspector General of Police Vincent M. Paul told reporters that three cases have been filed against Santhosh Madhavan and his driver Thomas.
He added that Madhavan has also been charged with possessing 'ganja' (marijuana) while the forest department has registered a case against him for keeping a tiger skin.
It is reported that a large number of pornographic films were also recovered from his flat here.

Record pass percentage (92.09%)in Kerala SSLC exam 2008

A record pass percentage of 92.09 per cent was registered in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination in Kerala, results of which were announced here today.

Announcing the results, Kerala Education Minister M A Baby said out of 451,464 candidates who had appeared for the examination, 415,744 were eligible for higher studies, recording a 9.8 per cent increase from the previous year.
A total of 6,480 students had secured 'A Plus,' which was 51.79 per cent more than the previous year, he added.
Kannur District recorded the highest pass percentage of 96.4 follwed by Palakkad, which recorded 85.6 per cent.

Idea, Etisalat to offer mobile money remittance from the Gulf region to Kerala

Telecom major Idea Cellular Ltd and UAE-based telco Etisalat on Wednesday announced a pilot project for mobile money remittance from the Gulf region to Kerala.
The pilot will have Tata Communications as the central hub for services and HSBC India as the banking channel for funds transfer, company officials told reporters here.
The service will enable expat Indian subscribers of Etisalat in Gulf to transfer money to any designated bank account of an Idea subscriber in Kerala.
HSBC will receive the money through UAE bank and will forward it through National Electronic Fund Transfer to one or multiple designated accounts in Kerala.
Tata Communications will coordinate on both the ends and will generate a SMS for the Idea subscribers as soon as the funds are received in the Idea subscriber's bank account.

Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode (IIM-K) hikes fee

The Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode (IIM-K) increased the fees for its two-year post-graduate programme from Rs 385,000 to Rs 600,000.
According to IIM-K director Krishna Kumar , revised fee would come into effect from the next academic session.
The board of directors decided on the hike in line with the decisions taken by other IIMs. The fee structure for the first and second year course of the management course at IIM-K would be Rs 300,000 each.

Google launched Hindi translation service.The service allows automated translation between Hindi and English.
Google Translate,also offers many translation to many other languages.
Users who want to translate some text, a web page, or issue a query in Hindi and have results translated from English, can do it on: http://google.com/translate_t
Google Translate will allow the users typing in Hindi using a regular keyboard. The user will only be required to type the word as it sounds. For instance, if a user wants to write the Hindi word “mera” meaning my or mine, he can do it simply typing "mera" using regular English characters; the word will be automatically converted to Hindi word.
Another product from Google,the iGoogle Gadget,can use to add services to their home page.iGoogle Gadget comes in various languages including, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
