Cochin Port Trust (CPT) appointed a consortium of Mumbai - based Ocean Blue Boating and Kerala-based Stark Communications as the 'event management team' for the Kochi stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race.
Billed as a combination of ''sports, business and glamour,'' the Volvo Ocean Race's only stopover in India will be at Cochin Port between December three to 14. This is the first time that the race, also described as the 'Formula One' of yacht racing will, be stopping over in India during its 39,000 nautical mile long itinerary.
Sport 18, a division of Network 18 and Screenary Media Pvt Ltd., had been appointed recently as the marketing managers for the event.
The event is jointly hosted by CPT and the Kerala Tourism Department.The entire event is expected to cost about Rs 30 crore.Cochin Port Trust will be spending Rs 20 crore more on lengthening the BTP jetty from the present 200 meters to 330 meters.
The sailing marathon will start from Alicante, Spain, in October 2008. Its other stopovers are Cape Town, Singapore, Qingdao in China, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway in Ireland, Goteborg and Stockholm before it ends in St Petersburg in Russia in early 2009.
