Kerala Police 24x7 Scheme is inaugurated by home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Thursday.
The scheme will enable the public to communicate with police officers and share vital information with them round-the-clock.Under the programme, mobile phone connections will be provided to Station House Officers of 433 police stations, 190 Circle Inspectors, 50 Sub- Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs), 17 DySPs of Special Branch, 17 DySPs of Crime Detachment, 17 DySPs of District Record Bureaux, four Range IGPs and two Zonal ADGPs and to the DGP.
The sim cards and connectivity for mobile phones will be provided by Vodafone Mobile Service Provider. The mobile phone numbers provided to these police officers will be widely publicized through the media and websites.
The programme is aimed at improving the Police-Public relationship.

The Left Democratic Front-ruled Kochi corporation has decided against granting license to national or multi-national retail monopolies in Kerala’s commercial hub.
The corporation also decided to impose development surcharge on supermarkets.
The license fee for supermarkets and malls has been hiked to a minimum of Rs1 lakh.The civic body will also impose Rs30,000 as development surcharge on supermarkets.Additional permits would be required to sell fish and meat.
The ruling CPI(M) has pledged support to the merchants’ protest against the entry of retail giants like Reliance and Wal-Mart.The state has already seen a hartal against the opening-up of retail outlets like Reliance Fresh.
Reliance Fresh has three retail outlets in Kochi. Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (SupplyCo) plans to open hypermarkets in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kottayam at a cost of Rs140 crore in a bid to counter the corporate competition.

BPCL-GAIL Joint venture to market CNG in Kerala, Karnataka

Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) and GAIL (India) will float a joint venture — God’s Own Gas Company (Go Gas) — for marketing compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped gas in Kerala and Karnataka.
GAIL and BPCL have signed an MoU for the Rs 400 crore venture. The equity structure of the JV will be similar to Indraprastha Gas — the gas supplier in Delhi.
GAIL will own 22.5 per cent stake in the company, BPCL 22.5 per cent, Kerala government 5 per cent and the rest will be held by strategic investors, public and financial institutions.
Petronet’s Kochi terminal, which will be the country’s fourth LNG terminal, will handle 5 million tonnes per annum LNG.

Kerala in the list of best e-governed states

The recent Dataquest-IDC e-Governance Survey has identified Delhi, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala as the five best e-governed states of 2007.This is a good sign of kerala moving forward in the hightech way.
Last year kerala was not appeared in the top list.
The survey was conducted across 20 states by CyberMedia group's flagship publication, ''Dataquest'', in association with the top technology intelligence and research firm IDC India.
The worst e-governed state of 2007 was Jharkhand followed by Gujarat and Haryana. Gujarat had the most drastic fall ending at number 19 from number 4 last year.

As a preparation to welcome Volvo Ocean Race, world’s premier offshore yachting event, a houseboat village will come up on the placid backwaters of this port city to host yachters and tourists.
Cochin Port Trust (CPT), the host, plans to park a flotilla of about 100 houseboats, each with three to four bedrooms, on the Kochi backwaters during the 10 days from December 3 to 13 to accommodate visitors.
This is for the first time that the Volvo Ocean Race, round-the-world marathon race, touches an Indian port on its nine-month-long 39,325-nautical-mile odyssey. Setting off from Alicante, Spain on October 4, the seven-yacht race will conclude at St Petersburg, Russia, in July 2009.Kochi beat Mumbai, Chennai and Goa to host the event.
The Race is one of the world’s most demanding and daring team sporting events, with its crests and troughs of human endurance.

Mumbai based Kamath Group through it's subsidiary Concept Hospitality, is entering into the Kerala market with the opening of its first hotel in Kollam next month.The property in Kollam, called the 'Beach Orchid' will be a 114 room luxury hotel which will be certified as ''environmentally sensitive.'' It is scheduled to be opened by April-end.According to the media reports ,another resort is on the anvil along the famous Kumarakom backwaters,as announced by Concept Hospitality Chairman and Managing Director Param Kannampilly.

This move will further boost the hospitality and torism sector of Kerala.Let us hope more and more such players will enter Kerala industry sector!!

Kerala state Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan announced that Kerala will implement community policing in select centers across the state beginning March 26.This is the first such programme to be implemented in the country.
Initially, this would be implemented in 20 police stations across the state. Policemen have already been trained and detailed talks have been held with elected representatives to ensure its success.

Community policing is a strategy based on the idea that community interaction and support can help control crimes, with citizens helping the police identify suspects and bringing problems to the attention of the authorities.
One police official would be placed on duty in an area of three square kilometres or 500 households.The policeman on beat duty will be the first contact point for the people in the area. The police official will also visit each and every household in his area and interact with the public.

Accoring to the reports from Malabar Chamber of Commerce, the Hungary-based OTP Bank has evinced interest in opening its IT off-shoring unit in Kozhikode.
At talks held between representatives of the Calicut IT Initiative (CITI) and officials of OTP Bank here recently, the latter said their IT venture would be launched soon.
Hungary OTP Bank director Gyorgy Kis, Programme Manager Szilardkatta, Malabar Chamber of Commerce joint secretary M. Khalid, IT Forum-Calicut representative T.P. Abdulla, and the former president of Calicut Management Association P. Mohanan were present.

This is a good and interesting move as far as Calicut IT future is concerned.
Already there are steps from government to set up IT park (cyber park)near Nellikode.

Let us hope for the best !

While delivering the presidential address at the World Forest Day celebrations organized by the Forest Department in Thiruvananthapuram Forest Minister Benoy Viswom said , a new wildlife sanctuary would be set up in Kozhikode district with Kakkayam as its center.
The procedures for setting up the proposed `Malabar Wild Life Sanctuary’ was expected to be completed within a year.
Definitely this will boost the tourism chances of that area ,especially peruvannamuzhi and surrounding areas.

Amul's initiative hopes to help vanilla farmers

Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), has decided to use natural vanilla to flavour its products in place of synthetic ones.GCMMF markets dairy products under the brand name 'Amul'.
For procuring vanilla,Amul has entered into an agreement with Vanilla India Producer Company Limited (Vanilco), based in Kochi.
Under the agreement, Vanilco will supply to Amul 20 tonnes of blended vanilla extract a year.
Vanilco is a company formed by vanilla growers.
Few years back Vanilla was growing was profitable ,but the price fell sharpply in the recent years.
As the price plummeted, most Kerala farmers abandoned the crop, which they had raised spending huge
Amul Wednesday formally launched its Vanilla Royale ice cream, which uses natural vanilla.

SAIL to enter Kerala through joint venture

The public sector major company Steel Authority of India (SAIL) entered the Kerala industry to set up a joint venture in the state and will manage the ailing Kerala government-owned Steel Complex Limited (SCL) as a joint venture project.
According to Kerala Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem "A rolling mill with 60,000 tonne capacity at an investment of Rs.500 million will be set up at SCL by the joint venture".
In the joint venture, the Kerala government and SAIL will have equal holdings. However, the management control will rest with SAIL.
As part of the agreement with SAIL, the government will consider settling SCL's liabilities, which is in the tune of Rs.1.03 billion. SCL expects a total investment of Rs.2 billion from SAIL in the venture.
It is understood that the new venture will retain all the 195 employees of the SCL.

In a shocking gruesome incident, V S Karthik,a 21-year-old,third year BDS student has hanged himself in Kannur in north Kerala while his helpless girlfriend watched it live on webcam from New Delhi.He was a student of Pariyaram Medical College,Kannur ,Kerala.
The investigation,revealed that Karthik was chatting with a girl, apparently his girlfriend, just before he took his life. Police said the girl was a management student in New Delhi and was related to him.
The computer of Karthik, who was cremated on Sunday, had shut down automatically around 7.45 pm on Thursday making police believe that the tragic incident must have happened in the evening.
The family was opposed to their relationship. "While chatting, Karthik told her that he was going to commit suicide. She panicked and begged him not to do so. But he was unrelenting. As the girl watched desperately, he turned the camera towards the ceiling fan and hung from it," the DSP said.

The Kozhikode centre of the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC), Kerala is paving a small stretch of road with plastic waste as part of its experiment to put to good use the huge amount of plastic garbage generated in the state.Though plastic waste has been used in road construction in neighbouring Tamil Nadu and some other states, the method may not suit Kerala because of different soil and climate conditions. Hence the experiment to develop a method suitable to the condition in the state is necessary, according to researchers working on the project. is paving a 400-metre stretch of road in Vatakara municipal town, 40 km from here, with plastic waste as part of its demonstration project.
The use of plastic saves bitumen up to 10 percent in road construction. Around a tonne of shredded plastic is needed to pave one km road with a width of 3.5 metres.
The method is to mix plastic with heated granite pieces. The molten plastic covers the granite pieces enhancing its binding property.

Minister for Culture and Education M.A. Baby said during ‘Basheer festival,’, a day-long programme organised by Asianet at Tagore Centenary Hall on Monday, that work on setting up a memorial for the famed author could be launched this year itself if a suitable site was identified.
Although Basheer had often said he belonged to Thalayolaparambu, Beypore also had a strong claim to be the site for the memorial as the author had ‘reigned’ as ‘the Beypore Sultan’ in his residence in that city suburb for many years, Mr. Baby said.He would like a memorial for Basheer to come up this year itself to coincide with Basheer’s birth centenary celebrations.
Dr. Sukumar Azhikode,authors M.T. Vasudevan Nair, P. Valsala, U.A. Khader, actors Mammootty and Madhu and lyricist Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri were among those who attended the Basheer festival.

The first phase of the Larsen & Toubro Tech Park `Tejomaya`, built at an estimated cost of Rs 1 billion, was inaugurated in Kochi on Saturday (March 17).

The company will invest Rs 1.8 billion for the second phase.
With a total built up area of 1.1 million sq. ft coming up in two phases and spread across 7.5 acres, L&T Tech Park is set to catalyze the IT boom in Kochi
L&T also launched the work for its proposed phase II project – ‘Signature Tower’. Both the projects are located in the Infopark campus at Kakkanad, Kochi. Signature Tower, the Phase II project envisages the development of the 21 storied Twin-tower of 6.75 Lakh sq. ft area and is designed to be a Landmark for IT Infrastructure at Kochi.
Several IT majors like TCS, IBS, Arbitron Inc., L&T Infotech, etc. have already booked space in Tejomaya. Over 3500 software engineers are expected to be working out of the facility.

Sun TV Network launched its FM radio stations at Kannur, Kerala, under the brand `S FM` through its subsidiary Kal Radio on Mar. 12, 2008 at a frequency of 93.5 MHz.

With the launch of this FM station, the total operational FM Stations of Sun TV goes up to 5 as it already operates at Kozhikode (Calicut),Thiruvananthapuram,Thrissur and Mangalore.

Kal radio hold licenses for 45 FM Radio Stations across India, and will be one of the largest radio broadcasters in India when all the remaining 20 stations become operational.
