Places to see in and around Kottayam

Kumarakom - 14 km west of Kottayam, in Kuttanad.
The place is famous for its bird sanctuary, house boats, backwaters, canals.Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is an ornithologist's paradise and a favourite haunt of migratory birds like the Siberian stork.

Wagamon and Kurisumala monastery-
Around 64 km from Kottayam.
Wagamon is an enchanting hill station at an elevation of 1100 metre, with tea gardens and meadows.Kurisumala monastery is a famous hill station and pilgrimage center for the Christians where cross put-up in each sub hill stations.Indo-Swiss Project dairy farms is situated on the hill. The hill dairy farm, managed by the Kurisumala monks.

Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls:
Aruvikkuzhi is around 18 km from Kottayam town, near Kumarakom.Another ideal picnic spot for the tourists, the Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls falls from a height of 100 feet.

Erumely -
Erumeli is an important pilgrimage centre for Hindus and Muslims. The mosque is dedicated to Vavar, a contemporary and companion of Lord Ayyappa, the deity of the Sabarimala Temple. The mosque is famous for the centuries old custom of multitudes of Hindu pilgrims worshipping here before their trek to Sabarimala to worship Lord Ayyappa.

Mahadevar Temple, Ettumanoor.

St. Mary's Church, Bharananganam, Pala:
The mortal remains of the St. Alphonsa (The first female saint of India) are entombed at this church which is now a famous pilgrim centre.

St. Mary's Church, Kuravilangad:
The St. Mary's Church built in 355 A.D on the high ganges of Kuravilangad town, this church has an old bell which bears a hitherto undeciphered inscription.


Pathiramanal:
This is a small white sand island, located in the middle of the Vembanad Lake on the border of Kottayam - Alapuzha Districts in Kerala.It gets its name from the brilliant reflection of moonlight from the sand.


Poonjar Palace -
Poonjar Palace is situatied in Meenachil taluk and is famous for its collection of antiques and exquisite furniture.


Vaikom Siva Temple -
Vaikom is around 40 km from Kottayam, famous for its Shiva Temple. Associated with the legendary Parasurama, this temple is a typical example of Kerala Temple Architecture.


Vembanad Lake -
Vembanad Lake is around 83 km length and 14.5 km width.
The lake, an enchanting picnic spot and a fast developing backwater tourism destination, provides boating, fishing and sight seeing experiences

St. Mary's Shrine here attracts people of all faiths. Various kinds of offerings are made here devotees.

Rail - The Kottayam railway station is situated 2 km from the central bus station and is connected to the major cities of india.
Road - Kottayam has an excellent road network links the district to all major towns and cities in india.
Water - Here are two ferry stations. The town jetty is about 3 km From the railway station and operates services during the monsoon.
