Kappad is situated 16 km from Kozhikode town.Kappad, also known as Kappakadavu locally, is famous as the beach near Calicut, India, where the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed on May 20, 1498. That created a new chapter in history, the story of a long and tumultuous socio-political relationship between India and Europe. His expedition gave the Europeans a sea route to reach the wealth of the Malabar coast, and resulted in European domination of India for about 450 years.At that time Malabar (Kozhikode or Calicut) was ruled by the Zamorins (Samoothiris in Malayalam) and was abundant in spices, and produced a calico textile gave a warm welcome to Vasco Da Gama.
