Edakkal Caves are located 1000 meters high on Ambukutty Mala 25 kms from Kalpetta in the Wayanad district of Kerala's Western Ghats.
The rock wall contains some interesting carvings, which represent human and animal figures and objects of human use and symbols.These carvings speak of a highly civilized people of pre-historic age.The oldest may date back over 8000 years ago. Evidence indicates that the Edakkal caves had been inhabited at several different times in history.These pictorial writings believed to be from neolithic man, evidence of the presence of a prehistoric civilization existing in this region.

How to Reach Edakkal Caves
Edakkal is less than 15kms from Sulthan Bathery.Sulthan Bathery is around 290 kms from Bangalore
By Air
The Karipur International Airport at Kozhikode is the nearest airport from here which is around 95 kms from here.

By Rail/ Train
The nearest railway station is located at a distance of 97 kilometers which is also at Kozhikode.

By Road
The Edakkal Caves can be accessed easily from anywhere in Kerala and Wayanad as it is well connected by a wide network of roads.
You can reach Wayanad from Bangalore via,
A : Bangalore - Mysore - Hunsur- Nagarhole - Kutta - Mananthavadi (Wayanad)
B: Bangalore - Mysore - HD Kote - Bavali - Mananthavadi ( Wayanad)
C: Bangalore - Mysore (150 kms)- Gundulpet - Munthanga - Sulthan Battery ( Wayanad)(140 Kms)

Route C is the most commonly used route.
