The Mahasivarathri is considered a very important day for fast and Siva worship.People visits Shiva temples and after bath smear their bodies with holy ashes.People keep on reciting the prayers to Lord Siva.
Pooja to Lord Siva is kept up all the night. Devotees of Lord Shiva observe the Shivaratri Festival by following the prescribed rituals with sincerity and devotion.On Shivaratri, only cold water and bael leaves are offered to the Lingam.
Shivaratri is celebrated on the 6th night of the dark Phalgun (Feb or March) every year ( Krishna Chathurdasi day).Strict vigil is kept in the holy night. Mahashivaratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed the 'Tandava'. It is also believed that on this day Lord Shiva was married to Parvati.
Early next morning people bath once more, worship Siva and return to there are Siva temples.The art form Kavadiyattom is of great significance in the celebration of the Sivarathri festival in Kerala.
The most famous place where Sivarathiri is celebrated in Kerala is Aluva."Aluva manalpuram" is famous for Shivratri celebration. The celebration of Sivarathri at the Siva temple at Aluva on the sand bank of River Periyar is attended with great devotion and tens of thousands of people gather there to worship.The holy Lingom rises out of the sand on the bank of the Periyar river.
Pilgrims offer Bali (sacrifice) to their ancestors in the morning succeeding the holy Shivratri night at Aluva Manapuram.
